After nearly 18 years as one of the top anchors for CNN en Español (CNNE), Glenda Umaña has become a household name in Latin America, winning the respect and recognition of millions of viewers. Now a freelance broadcast journalist, anchor and media consultant, she has become a popular speaker who continues to headline numerous conferences and events in Latin America.
Glenda currently hosts a weekly interview show: Mujeres De Las Americas (“Women of the Americas” for CB24 which portrays women of all ages and nationalities who have had positive impact in today’s world.
This past spring, Umaña covered the Presidential Summit of the Americas for Telemetro Panama, as an analyst and commentator of this historical meeting between Cuban President Raul Castro and US President Barack Obama. Her exclusive conversation with Cuban President Castro, made headlines when he shared he will be leaving the government in 2018 opening the way for elections. Previously she was host for Presidential Iberoamerican Summit in Veracruz, Mexico and for CELAC Presidential Summit in Costa Rica.
Glenda was Moderator for Forbes Powerful Women Conference – Latin America, held in Costa Rica and for 2015 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and IMF, Lima, Peru. She was also a speaker and moderator for “Innovation Forum” in Mexico City.
At CNN en Español Glenda was a news anchor, writer and reporter of hard news, lifestyle and entertainment. She appeared regularly on Mirador Mundail, Showbiz, Consulta Medica, Nuestro Mundo, Notimujer, Aetualidad En Vivo and Café CNN. She also did a daily Latin American news segment in English for the highly rated Rick Sanchez Show. In the United States, she has an Emmy nomination for best morning show.
Glenda was the Moderator for The Future of Latin American Big Cities, International Development Bank, Mexico and the Global Warming Forum, Earth University.
Glenda has covered a broad range of international news stories. Highlights of her coverage include: in-depth coverage of the aftermath of Haiti’s 2010 earthquake; the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge; Pope John Paul’s death; the fall and capture of Iraqi’s President Saddam Hussein; the September 11 terrorist attacks; and the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. She also hosted three Presidential Forums, in Chile and Guatemala.
Umaña has received numerous awards for her work in broadcast journalism, including “Best Television Reporting” from the Association of Central American Journalists. She was elected Grand Marshall for the “Festival de la Luz,” Costa Rica’s most acclaimed festival celebrated annually in San José.
Umaña joined CNNE for its launch in 1997 with 12 million viewers and helped to grow it to over the 50 million viewers it has in the United States and Latin America today.
Prior to CNN en Español, Umaña was a correspondent for CBS TeleNoticias. She started her journalism career as a reporter for San José’s Channel 17, the first English-language newscast in Costa Rica. In 1988, she joined Channel 7, and for eight years she was a reporter and anchor for the highest-rated newscast in the country.
Born in San José, Cost Rica, Umaña earned a degree in journalism from the Universidad de Costa Rica, and a Masters in Communication from Florida International University.
