Mini Bio

Gloria Álvarez is a political expert from Guatemala who has become well known for her discourse against populism. Her speech, given at the Parlamento Iberoamericano de la Juventud (Ibero-American Youth Parliament) held in Zaragoza (Spain) in 2014, enjoyed huge success on social networks.

Gloria Álvarez places emphasis on the need to educate society in the use of communication technologies as a way of making the public better informed and able to demand well-argued, well-reasoned debate from their representatives.

Social networks have made an very old message go viral: the government is there to guarantee three inalienable citizen rights: life, freedom and property”

Álvarez studied International Relations and Political Science at the Francisco Marroquín University in Guatemala, and took a Masters in International Development at the Sapienza University in Roma.

Her address against populism, a phenomenon that is affecting politics, really hit home in Latin America, where countries such as Cuba and Venezuela are governed by regimes known for their lack of democracy.  This is also the case in Spain, where the gap between society and the traditional political parties is widening, and alternatives with major popular impact are emerging.

She hosts the programme Viernes de Gloria (Friday with Gloria) on Libertópolis Radio and runs projects for the Movimiento Cívico Nacional (National Civic Movement), an organisation that ensures that the Guatemalan government is not tied to any political party. The movement is partly financed by the National Endowment for Democracy, a private, nonprofit organisation devoted to promoting and strengthening democratic institutions around the world.

She also is the host of a series of educational videos on Youtube channel of Fundación Libertad y Progreso (Freedom and Progress Fundation)

Currently she is working on two books, one solo and another written in collaboration with the Chilean economist Axel Kaiser
