Francesca Cavallo's career began in theater, managing a theater company, and in 2011 turned to the development of Timbuktu Magazine, the first iPad magazine for children, which led to the creation of Francesca's first company, Timbuktu Labs, founded in 2012 with journalist Elena Favilli.
As part of the startup incubator 500 Startups, Timbuktu raised a first round of investment in Silicon Valley, then chose to stay away from the world of traditional Venture Capital, moved its headquarters to Los Angeles, and turned to Kickstarter to fund the next stage in the life of the company.

The book was presented on Kickstarter with the goal of raising $40,000 to print the first 1,000 copies. After only 28 days, the campaign had raised $675,000 from 13,000 backers coming 75 countries, and "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls" had become the most crowdfunded book in history. By working in a completely disruptive manner, outside of the traditional publishing world, "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls" sold more than 4 million copies and it was translated into 48 languages, becoming a New York Times best-seller and one of the most influential book series of the past decade according to Common Sense Media.
