Mountaineer, Author, expert on teams, leadership and overcoming challenges
Mexican alpinist Karla Wheelock, is the first Latin American woman to reach the top of the Seven Summits, the seven highest peaks on each continent of the globe. She is also the first Latin American woman to reach the top of Mount Everest by the death-defying northern slope route, which has only been accomplished by a handful of fearless mountaineers, men and women.
Today, Karla is President of the KW Foundation, which focuses on developing leadership through youth empowerment. In her conference “Women of Achievement”, featured among others by UNWomen, Karla speaks about the barriers she’s faced and lessons she’s learned both on and off the mountain.
Karla says encouragingly, “When I started to climb mountains I was faced with many difficulties, people told me that it was not for me, it was not for women… I learned that the only voice well worth listening to is yours. Whatever your mountain is, whatever your top is, whatever your dream is, you can achieve it.”
