Nicolas Sarkozy served as the 23rd President of the French Republic (2007 to 2012). Prior to his presidency, Sarkozy served as Minister of State, Minister of the Interior and Spatial Planning and Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry. A visionary leader who has dedicated his life to public service, Sarkozy is widely recognized for his hands-on tactics and straightforward approach in dealing with the most critical issues of our time foreign policy, national security, global economics and immigration. Integral in the international community’s response to Libya’s civil war, he was also involved with brokering an end to the August 2008 conflict between Russia and Georgia and led the European Union’s response in establishing the G20 summits. Nicolas Sarkozy served as the President of the French Republic from 2007 to 2012, a position that culminated from years spent dedicating his life to a highly esteemed and richly diverse political career in France.
Prior to his presidency, Sarkozy occupied various ministerial posts including Minister of State, Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Economy, and Minister of Budget. From November 2014 to September 2016, Sarkozy served as President of the French political party Les Républicains (formerly known as Union for a Popular Movement), a position he previously occupied from 2004 to 2007. Sarkozy retired from politics in November 2016 following the center-right presidential primary election.
Earlier in his career, Sarkozy held a wide variety of political positions, including President of the General Council of Hauts-de-Seine and Mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine.
Sarkozy is the recipient of numerous honours and accolades, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit, Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Charles III (Spain), Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (United Kingdom), Knight of the Golden Fleece (Spain), Tolerance Award from the Simon Wiesenthal Center (2003), Humanitarian Award from the Elie Wiesel Foundation (2008) and World Statesman Award from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation (2008).
A prolific writer, Sarkozy is the author of several books including Free (2001); The Republic, Religions, Hope (2004); Testimony (2006); Together (2007); La France Pour La Vie (2016); and his most recent Tout Pour La France (2016).
